4 Reasons Your AC Is Running Overtime
- Coils are Obstructed or in Disrepair
The coils of the condenser (outdoor unit) are completely exposed to the elements of the outdoors, This means they will collect dirt, grass, sticks and other small debris that could clog the air flow. And, with reduced air flow comes reduced performance.
This is why springtime maintenance and inspection of your HVAC system to perform this condenser coil check-up is so critical. Springtime maintenance checks the condenser and evaporator coils to see if they need cleaning or if there is a problem of disrepair..
- Worn-out Thermostat
Another reason your AC may be running more than it should is that the thermostat may be faulty, providing false readings and thus not turning off. Thermostats don’t last forever or even as long as the HVAC system, unfortunately. But, not to worry…his is an easy fix!
Temperature controls have come a long way in recent years, especially in the connected arena. Nest learning thermostat, for example, are Wi-Fi enabled thermostats that will actually learn your occupancy patterns and program itself for the highest levels of efficiency and energy savings possible. - Your Filter Needs Changed
As stated above, air conditioning systems need regular maintenance to perform at their best. That includes changing the filter. A clogged filter will obstruct airflow and cause your system to work harder and run more. The best time for AC maintenance is now! Springtime maintenance on the AC system prepares it for the hot summer months and minimizes possible problems you could have later.
But not just the AC, with twice a year maintenance, you can prolong the life of your system…years beyond the warranty period, save on utility bills, and avoid costly repairs that can amount to thousands of dollars.
- Your HVAC System May Need Replacing
To repair or replace? That is the question. Here is your answer:
Your AC may be giving you signs it’s at the end of its life — you just have to look out for them.
- If you have an evaporative cooler, then you definitely want to replace your cooling system. Evap coolers are less effective, provide stale and unhealthy air, and run loud and constantly in the summer months.
- Consider the age of your unit: is it more than 15 years? If so, than you should consider a replacement
- Have you noticed a spike in your utility bills? That means there is a significant problem in your AC system. This could mean a repair or a replacement. If the repair is going to be more than $3-4,000 and you just had a sizeable repair not too long ago, you may want to replace it. Consider your track record of repairs when deciding to repair or replace.
- If your system is less than 13 SEER and/or running R22 refrigerant, you will want to replace it. This means you have an efficient system that will never perform well and operates with a refrigerant that is no longer available to replenish, if needed.
