In addition, importers may no longer import new shipments of it. Existing domestic stocks can be used to service existing equipment, however this will no longer be the case after 2020 which means that only recycled, reclaimed, or previously produced R-22 can be used to service existing equipment.
Instead, ozone-friendly alternatives can be used. For consumers, this means it will be very difficult, if not nearly impossible, to maintain an older HVAC system that requires R-22 refrigerant. Alternative refrigerants will not work without making changes to system components.
Transitioning to an acceptable refrigerant requires the conversion of an old air conditioning system or replacement to a new one.
