Many factors contribute to the quality of indoor air, from what artificial products are used in the house, to cooking, to preferences for comfort, including the HVAC, windows and doors. Continuously breathing bad indoor air is very unhealthy, causing many to have heightened allergies and sinus problems. You can eliminate the pollutants making your indoor air to be poor by knowing what’s causing it and then choosing a solution from our arsenal of air quality products to combat it.
Here is a list of typical allergens that affect your indoor air quality:
Outdoor-indoor allergens are substances that occur naturally outdoors but become concentrated indoors and can cause or exacerbate allergies and asthma. Allergens can come from pests like cockroaches, mice, and dust mites that many time roam the home and we don’t even realize it. Organisms in the form of pollen or mold also can easily enter the air of a home when using an evaporative cooler or other water product that is attached to the interior of a home on a consistent basis.
Fine particles (or dust) generally comes from what is circulating outside to what is going on indoors. Even the burning of candles can cause poor indoor air and create dust.
Toxic gases can build up in the interior of a home but are rare. Mostly, there is a danger of carbon monoxide that could come from heating the home. Naturally occurring radon gas can appear in a home by rising from the ground beneath. Though usually found at lower levels indoors than outdoors, ozone can infiltrate the home from outside or be produced by ozone-generating appliances or water treatment machines.
Household products and chemicals that are used to keep your home clean, as well as personal care products, release somewhat dangerous airborne chemicals. Beauty products, paints, lacquers, pesticides, and disinfectants are just a few of the typical things that many of us use on a daily basis that will emit toxic substances into the home.
There is also a host of chemicals that can be released from new mattresses, carpets and new clothing. In time, these generally lessen or wear off completely.
Tobacco smoke can be just as dangerous inside as it is outside.
In reality, almost every home has some sort of allergen(s) floating around. Allergens are invisible particles that can be found on the surface of just about everything. Allergens, like pollen grains, dust fibers, pet dander, and a wide variety of others, can be minimized with a good indoor air cleaner. Installing an indoor air cleaner is especially recommended for those whose immune systems dramatically react to indoor allergens.

Tax refund time is usually the best time to invest in larger home systems for the house, like getting new windows, painting the home, or converting to refrigerated air. It’s also a time when scammers know there is a little extra cash and homeowners looking for services like heating and cooling replacements.
Here’s 5 tips on what to look for from a service contractor and how to avoid possible scammers:
Ask for Identification
When a service technician comes to your door, always ask to see a business card or company badge before letting him in. Most reputable technicians wear company apparel and drive branded vehicles. If the heating and cooling technician can’t offer you proper verification of its company, DO NOT let him in your home.
Ask for Contractor License Number
It’s okay to take it a step further and ask to see a copy of the company’s license and insurance certificate. Most heating and air conditioning employees carry copies of these documents and it’s your right to request you see them before any work begins. Hiring a service company WITHOUT the proper licensing and insurance can be a big problem for you if something goes wrong, like an accident on your property…or a code violation
Do Your Research and Due Diligence on the Contractor
It’s always good to do a little research on a heating and cooling installer before hiring them. Check out their company profiles online at the BBB, Google or Yelp, Facebook, Angie’s List, etc., and read the reviews. Spending an extra 30-40 minutes researching HVAC contractors could save you a lot of time, money and TROUBLE in the long run. If you cannot find any background information about a heating and cooling company, you may want to rethink hiring that particular contractor.
Never Pay Upfront. Pay After the Project is Complete
RED FLAG. Scammers are the only people who ask for a down payment on repairs or replacements. Do not give credit card or cash to any service company or technician BEFORE the work is completed. If you are purchasing a new heating or air conditioning system on credit, you may have to apply for a new line of credit first, but you should not owe any money until the installation is complete.
“I Do This on the Side”…is a Phrase That You Should Never Hear
Beware of ‘side jobbers’. It takes a lot of training and experience to become a licensed and reputable HVAC contracting company. Most people working on the side may claim their labor rates are cheaper, and there’s a good reason for that. These individuals aren’t equipped, trained, licensing or insurance to do the job.
Don’t Take the Candy!
Deals and offers that sound too “over the top” are big red flags. In short, if the ‘deal’ seems too good to be true, it probably is!

In El Paso, the summers can be very harsh on the cooling system, which is why we always recommend preparing it now BEFORE you experience an untimely breakdown on the hottest days of the year. March is the best time to do this and for good reasons. Here’s why:
Spring is also the best time to replace your air conditioner should that be in the budget…and here’s why:
To schedule an A/C preventive maintenance check-up with Expert HVAC and Refrigeration, call us at 915-598-1732. Or, if you want to know what it would cost to convert to refrigerated air or replace an old system, call us and we’ll do a total home evaluation for a complete new, high efficiency HVAC system.
It’s March and that means strong storms in El Paso — whipping wind, loads of dirt and pouring rain.
One question we frequently get at Expert HVAC is “What does that do to the HVAC?” Well, not to worry. Your HVAC will not go flying off the rooftop or stop working because dirt is entering it. Outdoor packaged systems and condensing units are actually built to withstand nearly every weather condition, including our more severe storms in the early spring in El Paso.
Where the problem lies is at the air filter. The dirt that is flying around outside does find its way to the filters. And they can clog up quickly in these windy conditions.
You will want to change your air filters more frequently during our gusty spring months in El Paso. Clogged filters are the number one reason for HVAC maintenance and repairs. An HVAC system that has to work too hard to supply airflow will quit prematurely. And replacing the entire system is an expensive proposition, as you know.
Springtime maintenance on the air conditioner is also a wise decision for the HVAC. A comprehensive inspection and cleaning will keep your A/C running at peak efficiency, just as it did the day it was installed.
To ensure that you will always have the right filter, Expert HVAC and Refrigeration offers air filter home delivery. You’ll receive an air filter at your doorstep, just when will you need to make the filter change. Commercial grade filters will be delivered — not the ones you buy at the big box stores.
